Penwortham is a scattered village on the south bank of the River Ribble facing Preston, County Palatine of Lancaster. The village is at the most westerly crossing point of the River Ribble, with a bridge crossing it.
The name is derived from pen (meaning a hill), weid (meaning ford) and ham (meaning settlement).
