You can cut 2 to 4 bushels of wood every day in the forest and then sell it in the town market. The price of wood is about 5 pounds per bushel.
The number of bushels that the screen says you are cutting is what you will actually get. The rental for the town axe has already been deducted.
There is a limited number of places for Level 0s to cut wood. All the fir trees might be taken - but try them all.
